Meet Bett
One of my goals in writing Bett was to give Sedgewick's ensemble a member who chose to join this town.
Most of the others you meet in town are locals, born to Sedgewick. Bett grew up somewhere more comfortable. Being a Half-Elf, she'd already outlived any human, much less their patience for comfort. A good life gets boring eventually if you are of a certain mindset.
Bett has had plenty of time to build up her people skills. She'd always had a knack for charming and disarming, so opening a tavern seemed like a natural fit.
It took me a while to settle on her look. I decided she'd have blonde hair, cropped short and spiked from running her hands through it frequently. She favors the color blue. She'll tell you it's because it flatters her eyes, which is true, but I don't think that's all there is to it. Her age is hard to place. Elven blood will do that.
Speaking of her eyes, they're always moving. Bett's scanning the room, the door, everything, unless she's making eye contact with you. Then you have the full weight of her attention. The difference is obvious.
Bett built the Salty Reed from nothing but her savings and sweat. She saw an opportunity in a town without a tavern and couldn't resist. In the years since the tavern opened, Bett has come to call Sedgewick home, and the endless ennui is finally gone.
A regular at the Salty Reed isn't from Sedgewick. She's a merchant who, after passing through on multiple occasions for months, made Bett an offer that had nothing to do with drinks. It was the possibility of making a difference.
What I haven't decided is whether it was something Bett said that won her over, or something she did. I'm curious which you'd pick, and why!
Currently in development. I'll post more soon!
